It’s been a really busy month, with Russian atrocities in Ukraine at the forefront of nearly every news report. I have barely had enough time to keep up with the fast-flying sanctions being imposed on Russian financial institutions, government agencies and officials, oligarchs, and family members of both government officials and those closely linked to them!
Because the pace of designations has been challenging, to say the least, the Association of Certified Financial Crime Specialists is holding a webinar on sanctions.
The world quickly responded to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022, including many countries placing financial sanctions on Russian actors – politicians, oligarchs and companies. But what do immediate sanctions changes mean practically for your organization? What do you have to do to confirm you are not doing business with impacted persons and businesses? What does self-sanctioning mean?
There’s a lot to unpack, so the webinar should be lively, impactful, and hopefully useful. Thomson Reuters was kind enough to invite me as one of the speakers, so those of you who want to see what I actually look like can do that.
Those of you who know me in person can shut off your video or close your eyes, so your retinas don’t burn.
The webinar is free, and you can register via the link I provided above. ACFCS is a leader in the anti-financial crime community, and they have really great programs and certifications in the AML/CFT, sanctions, fraud, asset recovery, and other spheres. If you’re interested in financial crime (how to fight it, not how to commit it), do register for the webinar at the very least!
By the way my company (ThreatSTOP) is getting a lot of interest in our sanctions related lists of IP addresses because many organization feel the easiest way to be sure they are compliant is to simply block all communication with Russia and Russia related sanctioned entities.
I'm currently struggling to create domain name lists (any idea how many different Sberbank subsidiaries there are?) and hopefully we'll have something out in the next day or two with a plan to improve it over time.
