I saw CNN’s feature on Navalny which, IIRC, was released in 2022. I came away in awe of this man’s courage. As I told my husband, “Navalny clangs when he walks.”

I recently read at another Substack that Navalny wasn’t very popular in Ukraine since he supported the annexation of Crimea. As you pointed out, he was also a nationalist. I can’t help but think, however, if he had become president the invasion of Ukraine wouldn’t have happened. Or am I wrong?

Still, RIP Alexei Navalny. The world needs more brave men like you.

I think you’re right in that he wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine. His brand of nationalism was more about keeping immigrants out.

Rob and I often wondered why he chose to go back when he undoubtedly knew he would be arrested and would likely die in prison. I think he thought his arrest and subsequent death would draw the world’s attention to the filthy hole that is Russia.

Navalny reminded me of another brave man from my religious heritage: Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He had been a thorn in the Reich’s side due to his opposition to the Nazification of Christian churches in Germany. Bonhoeffer had been living in NYC when WWII broke out, and his family told him to stay in the US, but he also returned to his country and continued to oppose the Reich. We all of his end: he was eventually jailed and hanged in 1945.

May he rest in peace, and prayers for his family. No other words...
